Friday the 13th was certainly not unlucky for the six nominated charities benefitting from the 2009 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. At a function held in the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney on Friday night they shared the proceeds from what has become one of the biggest one day charity events in the country.
This year over 3000 cyclists took part and succeeded in raising the phenomenal sum of €451,000.

The six main charities involved in 2009 were:

KERRY RAPE & SEXUAL ABUSE CENTRE

KERRY BRANCH OF DOWN SYNDROME IRELAND

RATHMORE SOCIAL ACTION GROUP

KERRY BRANCH OF THE IRISH SOCIETY OF AUTISM

KILLARNEY ORDER OF MALTA

ROCKMOUNT ALZHEIMERS CARE CENTRE

Tim O’Brien, Chairman of the Organising Committee, stated that everybody involved with the event was thrilled with the huge amount of money raised by the cycle which took place on Saturday 4th of July. He attributed the huge success of the event to the involvement of Radio Kerry this year and welcomed the statement by Mr. Paul Byrne, Radio Kerry’s Chief executive that they would be delighted to be on board again in 2010.
Mr. O Brien said that the fact that the events website, www.ringofkerrycycle.ie, had been upgraded also served to raise the profile of the cycle. He paid tribute to all the people who put in so much work to make the event such a success.

“The cycle could not take place without the wonderful cooperation of all the charities, cyclists sponsors, Gardai and huge body of volunteers who give their time willingly.” “We are already in the process of planning for next year’s Cycle which takes place on Saturday 3rd July” he said.

Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle 2009 - 4th July

Rain Did Not Deter Record Numbers of Cyclists

The 26th Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle took place on Saturday 4th July and despite some intermittent harsh weather along the way, over 3,500 cyclists completed the 112 miles of the picturesque route along the Ring of Kerry. In between the showers, the sun did break through and kept everyone’s spirits high as they cycled to raise vital funds for 6 Kerry charities: - Rockmount Alzheimers Daycare Centre; Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre; Irish Society for Autism - Kerry Branch; Footsteps Down Syndrome; Rathmore Social Action Group and Order of Malta Ireland - Killarney Branch.

The cycle was officially started by Moss Keane at 8am from St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney town, after a blessing from Bishop of Kerry Rev William Murphy and also words of encouragement from newly elected Killarney Town Mayor Michael Gleeson. Registration also took place before the start of the race as all participants were obliged to display a registration tag and wear a safety helmet if they wished to participate. To help with the smooth processing of cyclists, the Organising Committee arranged registration the day before in Scott’s Hotel, where unprecedented numbers of cyclists, 2,000, were able to pre register, from 7pm to 10.30pm on Friday evening.

Due to the high number of participants many people set off as early as 6am to get a head start. Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle Committee Member, Brendan Coffey was responsible for the army of back up crews. “We had 6 vehicles on the route, manned by volunteers, to assist any cyclists who experienced any difficulty or needed repairs. This year, we introduced an emergency number to cyclists, which they could phone if they were in trouble and this central phone system worked really well. In fact we got our first call out at 6.15am. Someone had only gotten as far as Fossa and had a puncture. I would like to thank the various organisations that supplied us with Ambulances and Doctors, who thankfully were not too busy on the day. I would also like to thank our team of masseurs who travelled to all the main stops along the route and were kept busy offering very welcome massages to many aching and weary cyclists.”

The cyclists’ first official stop was Colaiste na Sceilgie, at Caherciveen. Here over 40 volunteers from the various charities “fed and watered” well over 3,000 cyclists within an hour and a half. Principal of the School, Michael Donnelly, also believed that it was the biggest turnout yet and stated that it was the first year ever in the 7 years of welcoming the cyclists to the school that they actually ran out of sandwiches!! Michael wished to give a special thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard on the day And a special mention to Francie O’Driscoll, Canteen Manager at the school, who co-ordinated the volunteers.

At Caherciveen, Sponsors Radio Kerry were on site with an Outside Broadcast Unit, broadcasting a live programme with Francis Jones from 11am to 2pm. Many of the organisers, volunteers and participants were interviewed live on air by Francis and hundreds of messages of support from listeners from all over Kerry and beyond were broadcasted on the popular Saturday show. As well as this, the station took regular updates from two brave Radio Kerry personalities Sports Editor, Joe O’Mahony and Presenter Andrew Morrissey, who participated in the cycle, representing Radio Kerry. Joe stated “The response we have received from everyone has been amazing and the fact that we were taking part really brought it to life for our listeners. Keeping us going was the fact that we couldn’t let down all the listeners who have sent in their messages of support as well as donations.”

The cyclists completed the Ring through Sneem, Kenmare and finally through Molls Gap, with the main body of cyclists returning to Killarney town at 5.30pm to complete a lap of the town. Greeting them on their return was Tim O’Brien, Chairman of the Organising Committee “This year has been a great success, thanks to the number of participants and also to the many volunteers and Committee Members who have been working for months on the planning of the event. We now would ask everyone who pledged sponsorship to their friends, colleagues and loved ones who participated, to help them collect the money as quickly as possible, so that we can pass the funds to the nominated charities without delay.”

Part of the success story of the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle is that it attracts people from all over Ireland and this year there were representatives from all 32 counties. One of the last people to register was Andrew Hueston, from Fermanagh. He found out about the Charity Cycle through his local paper which published an appeal for Fermanagh Cyclists to participate, when it was discovered that no one from the county had entered. Andrew decided to make the trip to Killarney just the day before the Cycle and in appreciation of his efforts of representing his county, the Quality Resort in Killarney offered Andrew complimentary accommodation for the weekend. Tired, but immensely satisfied, Andrew returned to Killarney at 6pm. “It was one of the best experiences I have had and I made many new cycling friends along the route. I just want to thank everyone involved for making me feel so welcome and apart of this great activity. I am already making plans to come back next year, but hope to bring a big group of my cycling pals from Fermanagh along. For anyone who enjoys cycling, this is one event that is not to be missed.”

For anyone who would like to donate to the Cycle and to the six Kerry Charities, postal donations can be sent to The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle, PO Box 115, Killarney Post Office, New Street, Killarney. Enquiries can also be made by phone to (064) 6671900. Further information on the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle can be found on www.ringofkerrycycle.ie

Chosen Charities Gather for Call of Support

With just over six weeks to go until the 26th annual Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle, the six Kerry charities who will be the beneficiaries of this year’s cycle met at Radio Kerry’s Head Office in Tralee to send out a joint message on the Charity Cycle. The event, which is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Munster, raises vital funds for Kerry Based Charities who provide vital services for people in need in the Kerry area. The six chosen charities are as follows:-
•	Rockmount Alzheimer Daycare Centre
•	Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre
•	Irish Society for Autism – Kerry Branch
•	Footsteps Down Syndrome
•	Rathmore Social Action Group
•	Order of Malta Ireland – Killarney Branch

At yesterday’s gathering, a call went out for more participants to take part in the 112 mile leisure cycle around the picturesque Ring of Kerry, which takes place on Saturday 4th July. Also, as a reminder of what the cycle is hoping to achieve. Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Organising Committee stated “Now more than ever Kerry Charities need our support and anyone can help by sponsoring cyclists who are taking part or perhaps by taking part themselves. As the evenings are getting longer, more and more people are getting outside to exercise on their bikes and have decided to sign up for the Charity Cycle. There has been a steady stream of people signing up each week and we hope that this will continue at a strong rate.” Cathal’s message to people who are interested in sponsoring the cyclists is “Please be as generous as you possibly can when sponsoring a cyclist, as every cent collected will go directly to the Charities, also people can donate directly by contacting us through the website or by phone.”

To date the Ring of Kerry Cycle has raised over €3 million for Kerry Charities and to support this massive fundraising initiative the Radio Kerry Community Fund, a fund that was set up by Radio Kerry to raise money for Kerry Community and Charity projects, has come on board this year as the event sponsor. Melanie O’Sullivan, Sales & Marketing Manager for Radio Kerry, who was also present at yesterdays gathering, stated “Over the past six weeks we have featured all of the charities on the Kerry Today Show with John Greene and the feedback we received from listeners has been great. Just another way for us to support such worthy causes. In addition to this, two of our colleagues Joe O’Mahony and Andrew Morrissey have decided to participate and are busy getting their own sponsorship cards filled!!”

Further information on all of the Charities can be found on the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle – www.ringofkerrycycle.ie. The website also contains Hints and Tips for people wishing to participate as well as a month by month training schedule provided by Olympian and Killarney native Gillian O’Sullivan, who is very familiar with the event as she has participated in the cycle before.

For people interested in participating in the actual cycle and fundraising for these Kerry Charities, registration forms are available on the website. Postal Applications can be sent to The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle, PO Box 115, Killarney Post Office, New Street, Killarney. Enquiries can also be made by phone to (064) 6671900. Anyone wishing to make a direct donation can also do so by using these contacts.

A bright new future for fundraising in Kerry

Today new and exciting plans were unveiled for the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle, which will take place this year on Saturday 4th July. The event, now in its 26th year, is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Munster, attracting thousands of leisure cyclists who will experience a fun and rewarding day’s cycling, completing 112 miles of the spectacular Ring of Kerry, while at the same time fundraising for worthy Kerry based Charities. To date the Ring of Kerry Cycle has raised over €3 million for Kerry Charities and to support this massive fundraising initiative the Radio Kerry Community Fund, a fund that was set up by Radio Kerry to raise money for Kerry Community and Charity projects, has come on board as event sponsor.

Launch of the Ring of Kerry Cycle

Speaking at the launch Sales & Marketing Manager of Radio Kerry, Melanie O’Sullivan stated “This sponsorship ties in extremely well with our own fundraising projects, run through the Radio Kerry Community Fund, which was established to give back to worthy causes around the county. In these times that are challenging for everyone, it is more important than ever to consider the less fortunate and Radio Kerry is delighted to be joining forces with a well renowned and established project that raises so much revenue and profile for Kerry Charities.”

As well as the sponsorship announcement, a new Organising Committee was revealed, who will take over the reins from a team who have worked together diligently for the last 26 years, under the Chairmanship of Denis Geaney and included Paddy O’Donoghue and John Sheppard. Dan McCarthy is remaining on the Committee as Services Manager and will be joined by Tim O’Brien – Chairman; Karena McCarthy – Secretary; Brendan Coffey & Padraig Treacy – Joint Treasurers; Cathal Walshe – PRO, who was also PRO of the previous committee and Melanie O’Sullivan – Radio Kerry Representative.

On behalf of the new team Cathal Walshe stated “Thanks to the dedication of the original committee, The Ring of Kerry Cycle is well established in the hearts, minds and calendars of Kerry people the length and breadth of the country as well as the UK. Together with the sponsorship and the new team we wish to build on the tremendous success of the original committee. Also with Radio Kerry’s kind sponsorship, it will ensure that all monies collected by the cyclists will go directly to the nominated Charities.”

Today a call is going out to Kerry Charities who are interested in applying to be a recipient for 2009. Any interested Charities can apply in writing to The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle, PO Box 115, Killarney Post Office, New Street, Killarney.

For the thousands of people interested in participating in the actual cycle, registration forms will be available on line on the new website www.ringofkerrycycle.ie. Postal Applications can be sent to the above address or enquiries can be made by phone to (064) 6671900.
