Information & Guidelines
The 2nd of July is not too far away and we want to ensure that each and everyone participating or helping out has a most enjoyable day. With this in mind we would ask you to read carefully the information detailed below.
- The closing date for registrations is Friday 17th June 2011. You will be able to register on the Friday night/Saturday morning but we strongly advise doing so before the closing date.
Please take care not to register twice. If you have any problems please email us. - Public Liability Insurance Cover is provided by Cycling Ireland. Join Cycling Ireland for €10 and see benefits at www.cyclingireland.ie.
- Starting point at The Racecourse, Ross Road, Killarney which will be clearly signposted on all approach routes. PLEASE NOTE: This year all cycling clubs and groups have been instructed to start at 6.00am sharp. If you wish to avoid these please delay your departure from Killarney until 6.15am. Car parking will be available at the Racecourse.
- Sign in and new registrations will be possible on the eve of the cycle from 6.00pm - 9pm on Scotts Street which is accessible from East Avenue Road and College Street (food available and entertainment will be provided). AND from 6am to 7.45am on the morning of the cycle at the Racecourse, Ross Road, Killarney which will be clearly signposted on all approach routes.
- If you have registered online, you must sign in at one of the designated times to collect your bike label which will ensure your access to the food stops and passage by the Stewards at checkpoints. Please bring your registration card / cyclist number with you.
- The emergency number for the day is 087-1440054. This number will be in operation from 6.00am until 9.00pm on the day of the cycle.
- This year the route will be signposted with direction arrows and there will be distance indicator signs every 10kms.
- Cyclists must stay inside the middle white line and be mindful of other road-users.
- Main food stops:
- _ At 64 kilometers. Caherciveen. Colaiste na Sceilge, (the school is situated on the Waterville side of the town on the right hand side).
- _ At 145 kilometers. Kenmare Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Secondary School which is located beside the church.
- _ There will be a number of water stations along the route.
- Helmets must be worn by all cyclists. Please obey stewards and Gardaí and at all times and obey the rules of the road. Be mindful of your own safety and that of others.
- Cyclists can have their photographs taken at the finish line which they can then access online from our website. Certificates will also be given to all participants when they sign back in at the desk located at the Gleneagle Hotel.
- A choice of different food will be available at Scotts Hotel, Scotts Street at specially reduced prices from 4p.m. to 9p.m. on the evening of the cycle. Why not round off the day by joining your fellow-cyclists with open air entertainment which will be provided free of charge from 7p.m. onwards.
- There will be no facility on the day for minding peoples personal belongings so please ensure that you can carry whatever you need on your person/bike.
- Make sure your bike is checked and in good working order. Please bring with you at least two spare tubes and a repair kit. Read the online training tips for some great advice.
- Please remember that this is a charity event, so please raise as much as possible and get all sponsorship cards and money back to us by the 31st of July 2011.
Cycling Ireland Rules & Guidelines
The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is being promoted under the auspices of Cycling Ireland and all entrants must adhere to the following guidelines from their Safety Code:
- Have a bicycle that is in good working order.
- Wear a hard shell cycling helmet.
- Be mindful of the need to act in a manner that takes account of their own safety and the safety of others.
- Ensure their fitness level is appropriate given the nature of the event.
- Ensure their nutritional requirements can be met.
- Be conversant with and obey the rules of the road at all times.
- Familiarise themselves with the event route.
- "Sign-on" for the event.
- Be aware that marshals are not empowered to stop traffic.
You must read the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and Cycling Ireland Guidelines before entering and you will have to accept them during the entry process.
